Poland, as a NATO member, has worked for years to modernize the military capabilities left over from the Soviet legacy. Because of the events in Donbass, Poland “is nervous and wants to buy missiles,” the publication writes.
A deal for the supply of long-range missiles worth $250 million was signed on December 11. The signing ceremony took place in a hangar with an F-16 and a model rocket at the Krzesina airbase in Poznan. The deal includes the acquisition from aerospace and defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. 40 air-to-ground missiles. They will be integrated into the Polish Air Force fleet.
Polish Defense Minister Tomasz Simoniak added that modern weapons are “especially necessary” due to the conflict in Donbass.
The deal for the AGM-158 JASSM missiles also includes the associated equipment, training and technical support needed to keep them operational.
Delivery will take place in 2015 and 2016. The missiles are scheduled to enter service in 2017. The US State Department and Congress approved the deal this fall, making Poland the third country allowed to buy advanced US missiles after Australia and Finland.
The AGM-158 JASSM missile is a warhead similar in size to a drone that is launched from a bomber or heavy fighter and strikes ground targets.
