This was reported by the press service of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, UNN reports.
“The European Commission, on behalf of the European Union, has added to its active support for the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (OSCE SMM) to Ukraine, whose mandate was recently extended, for the full implementation of the Minsk agreements. New funding of €3 million will provide timely and substantive support to the OSCE in the field of satellite visual reconnaissance. This assistance will be provided within the framework of the Instrument for Promoting Stability and Peace,” the statement said.
According to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, the new assistance demonstrates the EU's unwavering commitment to the Minsk agreements and also speaks of the EU's determination to facilitate the work and support the OSCE SMM.
“The use of satellite imagery will allow for deeper monitoring of the situation in areas that, unfortunately, observers still do not have access to. They will also contribute to a more efficient deployment of observers in general,” Mogherini emphasized.
As noted, satellite visual reconnaissance allows the OSCE SMM to identify wide areas to which mission observers do not have access. Also, using this mechanism, it is possible to obtain information about damage to infrastructure and the presence or movement of manpower and equipment.
It is also about strengthening the ability to carry out scientific and technical observations - including through the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, night vision cameras, sensors and other surveillance devices.
Recall кAs PolitNavigator previously reported, On March 16, the OSCE Permanent Council extended the mandate of the Special Observation Mission to Ukraine for one year, until March 31, 2018, with a budget of over 100 million euros.
