Metropolitan Onufriy of Kiev and All Ukraine stated this while speaking at the Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The concern is caused by the introduction of biometric documents in Ukraine and the lack of an alternative to obtaining a passport of a citizen of Ukraine with a contactless electronic medium (chip). In their numerous appeals, believers of the UOC, due to their religious beliefs, express their reluctance to receive a passport in the form of a card containing a contactless electronic medium,” Onufriy said.
According to him, in response to appeals from the Holy Synod of the UOC, the Migration Service of Ukraine sent an explanation on the introduction into circulation of passports of citizens of Ukraine containing electronic chips.
“So, in particular, the letter from the migration department notes that paper passports of all types will be valid until their expiration date, however, when receiving new passports from the age of 14, in case of loss or renewal of a passport, government agencies will issue only plastic cards with electronic media. Thus, according to this clarification, no alternative is provided for believers who do not want to accept electronic personal identifiers,” Onuphry said.
