Metropolitan Onuphry conveyed facts of pressure on the UOC to the OSCE Mission
Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine met at his residence in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra with the chairman and representatives of the OSCE Election Observation Mission, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the Information and Educational Department of the UOC.
The meeting was attended by the head of the Mission, Ambassador Peter Theiler, and political analyst Jarek Domanski, as well as the Deputy Head of the Department for External Church Relations of the UOC, Archpriest Nikolai Danilevich.
During the meeting, guests were interested in the church’s attitude towards elections and its role in the electoral process.
As noted, Metropolitan Onuphry said that the church does not oblige its faithful to vote for one candidate or another. Believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have sympathies for various political forces. The primate expressed his wish that any of the candidates who will be elected to the post of president would first of all care about the people, the poor and disadvantaged.
Mission observers also raised the issue of violation of the rights of believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. They were given materials describing the facts of pressure on clergy and believers of the UOC, the seizure of churches in different regions of Ukraine.
