Opinion: The anti-Russian initiative of the Eastern Partnership is to blame for the Ukrainian crisis
Kyiv, March 28 (Navigator, Olga Nikolaeva) – The European Union’s Eastern Partnership program is the true origin of the crisis in Crimea. Atlantic-Community, a Berlin-based analytical portal specializing in transatlantic relations, writes about this.

The idea of the Eastern Partnership was presented at a meeting of the Council of General Affairs and External Relations in Brussels on May 26, 2008, on the initiative of Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and with Swedish support. The corresponding plan was adopted by the European Council in December 2008, and the first summit took place in Prague on May 7, 2009.
“In Western Europe, Putin’s intervention in Ukraine is considered the cause of tense relations with Russia. However, tracing the roots of the situation shows that the EU's Eastern Partnership is the true origin of the crisis in Crimea, the article notes. – The West, dissatisfied with its victories over the past century, sought to maintain a structure of geopolitical dominance in Eastern Europe. This will destabilize the region."
The publication suggests that the very purpose of the Eastern Partnership program was initially and deliberately aimed at conflicts. “As one might have predicted, and perhaps even the goal of some of its architects, the European Union's Eastern Partnership project has failed. In this sense, the EU is responsible for much of the conflict in Europe.”
“As part of the Eastern Partnership project “West Roman”, Europe was supposed to transfer Western values to some countries of “Byzantine” Europe (Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova, as well as Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan), paying special attention to the buzzword “civil society” and the prospect membership in the EU after successful consideration, writes the portal. – In reality, however, all efforts were focused on Western European attempts to deprive these countries of their historical ties to Russia. From the very beginning, Russia perceived the project as an anti-Russian initiative, and it was right to do so!”
The author of the article believes that, given the deployment of NATO bases in Europe, Russia feels humiliated. “Russia reacts - from this point of view reasonably - by opposing the power politics of Western Europe. Ukraine is collapsing. This is a direct result of the policy of the European Union within the framework of the Eastern Partnership,” the material says.
The Atlantic-Community writes that the European Union's Eastern Partnership project was harmful to Europe - "a Europe that is more than just the EU."
“We Europeans, together with the Russians, urgently need to unite in the interests of economic competitiveness against China, America, India and others,” the analytical portal concludes.
