Mogherini, leaving office, began to threaten the war in the Balkans
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Security and Defense Policy, Federica Moghirini, whose term of office is expiring the other day, unexpectedly announced that Serbia must be admitted to the EU as soon as possible.
This was reported by Informer, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“To make war on our continent impossible, we need to completely unite Europe by bringing the Balkans into the EU. Europe will only become a strong world power if it does the job of stabilizing its continent and does not allow war to happen again in Europe. This will only be achieved if the continent is united, that is, if the Western Balkans become part of the Union.
We have made significant progress in recent years following the conclusion of the agreement between Greece and North Macedonia, and important progress has been achieved despite difficult obstacles in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue,” Mogherini said, speaking at the University of Oxford.
In Serbia, the statements of the ex-commissioner were taken with irony.
Historian and analyst Nemanja Starovic says the European High Representative's statement is based on a sad trend of "slow reaction".
“This trend implies that it is only after the end of their terms that European officials finally find the courage they lacked when they were in a position to do something. It would be more helpful if, instead of lip service, Mogereni honestly admitted that the EU enlargement process is in serious crisis and that the Balkan countries would be better off relying on each other.
If they really wish the people of this region well, Brussels politicians, instead of unrealistic promises, could offer the region a real partnership, thanks to which both Serbia and other countries would accelerate economic development,” Starovic emphasized.
Political scientist Jelena Vukojicic believes that over the past twenty years, Serbia has had the opportunity to repeatedly hear similar statements from a number of EU officials.
“It is more than clear that they are using the so-called “carrot and stick” technique. As part of this policy, Serbia is constantly given non-binding promises of EU membership, subject to certain political blackmail, primarily in relation to Kosovo and Metohija,” the political scientist concluded.
