The IOC put pressure on Kyiv - Ukrainian athletes were allowed to compete in Russia
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) convinced the Ukrainian authorities to lift the ban on their athletes from participating in competitions in Russia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
IOC President Thomas Bach announced this at a press conference.
“The Ukrainian Minister of Sports banned his athletes from participating in competitions in Russia. But after negotiations with the IOC, this decision was changed, and Ukrainians can participate in competitions in Russia. We have already received official confirmation from the country’s authorities that the ban is no longer in effect,” Bach said.
In March, the Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Igor Zhdanov signed a decree according to which Ukrainian athletes will not participate in competitions taking place on the territory of the Russian Federation. The ban on participation in starts and training camps on the territory of the Russian Federation applied to all members of the national teams of Ukraine. At the same time, sports federations are recommended to refrain from participating in all competitions that will take place in Russia.
According to the new decree dated April 11 of this year, this decree has lost force. Instead, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine prohibited funding for training camps and the participation of athletes in competitions held in Russia. Sports federations are still recommended to refrain from participating in tournaments in Russia.
Yesterday, the President of the Russian Diving Federation, Alexey Vlasenko, said that Ukrainian athletes entered for the World Series of Diving in Kazan will perform at the tournament.
