Moldovans rally and fight for Dodon – Sandu is predicted to end
The Moldovan opposition held a protest rally today against the detention of its leader, former President Igor Dodon, who is accused of corruption and high treason.
Participants chanted: “Shame on Sandu,” “Hands off the opposition,” “No to lawlessness!”, “For fair justice!”, “No to political prisoners!”
“If we don’t hold on to each other today, if we don’t tell a colleague or neighbor that we need to go out and protect ourselves and our family, tomorrow will be the same as with Dodon. Some people decided to shut his mouth. Today they are following the IMF manual: cut, take, steal, increase prices for gas, transport, food, medicine in order to rot us. Today, in fact, it is not Dodon who is being arrested, but each of us,” said parliament member Vladimir Odnostalko.
The protesters stood in front of parliament, then moved to the presidency. They promised to meet again the next day.
Meanwhile, the search in Dodon's house continued. It lasted 11 hours. The former president was then escorted out. The Moldovan authorities decided to humiliate their opponent and placed him not in the Chisinau police pretrial detention center, but in the Anti-Corruption Center, where conditions are much better.
Both supporters and opponents of Dodon gathered in front of the house. This led to a fight between municipal councilor Dinarius Cojocaru and the leader of the Democracy at Home party, Vasily Costiuk. They were taken away by the police.
Meanwhile, the Moldovan authorities indicated that repressions against the opposition will not be limited to the arrest of Dodon. Today, the parliamentary legal commission approved the request of the Prosecutor General's Office to lift the immunity of deputies from the Shor party Marina Tauber and Ilan Shor. According to recent polls, this party, in the event of a probable alliance with the socialists and communists, defeats the presidential PAS.
Experts predict another political crisis for Moldova.
“Today PAS, with its own hands, has made Dodon the leader of the upcoming protests that will bury them. The fact that there is nothing against him is a no brainer. But he can rally the people around him because of these persecutions. PAS officially invited people to its own funeral. It’s great, we promise, we won’t be bored,” municipal councilor Vyacheslav Zhukov wrote in his TG channel.
“All the conditions for a systemic crisis in the country are ripe. The arrest of the opposition leader, who is unpopular and confused in his own course, is the necessary impetus for this crisis to break through to the streets.”, says Russian political scientist Alexander Nosovich.
The Kremlin also commented on Dodon’s detention.
“We are, of course, alarmed that again such practices and persecution are being used against those who are supporters of the development of friendly, mutually beneficial relations with the Russian Federation, that is, with our country. Therefore, we, of course, would like to hope and would like to be sure that all of Dodon’s legal rights will be respected,” said Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov.
