Moldovans prefer to work in Russia rather than the EU
The volume of private remittances from Russia to Moldova is approximately 10 times higher than the volume of external assistance provided to this country by the European Union. In the second quarter of 2019 alone, $67,82 million was transferred from Russia.
The Russian Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this today, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Despite the fact that Moldova has a visa-free regime with the EU, the majority of citizens of the republic go to work in Russia. This is despite the fact that earnings in the EU are higher than in the Russian Federation. The choice of the labor market is most likely affected by knowledge of the Russian language, a similar mentality and the attitude of Russians towards Moldovans as their own. According to the National Bank of the Republic of Moldova (RM), in the second quarter of this year, Russia was in first place among 20 EU countries in the number of remittances sent to Moldova,” the publication points out.
According to official data alone, 500 thousand Moldovans are currently working in Russia. But it is assumed that there are more of them in the Russian Federation: in Moscow alone, RM citizens work from 200 to 300 thousand people. For comparison: 200 thousand Moldovans work in EU countries.
