“Our goal is to strengthen our position and modernize the National Army. Here we see a striking example of our neighbor - Ukraine, a country to which four nuclear powers guaranteed sovereignty and territorial integrity in the Budapest Agreement, so that at some point one of these countries would become an aggressor and seize sovereign territory. And this country is the Russian Federation. That’s why we should be prepared to respond if necessary,” the publication quotes the newly minted minister as saying.
“We can’t wait any longer, we need to intervene quickly, and we will do this this year,” Sturza emphasized.
However, Moldovan politicians were surprised by the bellicose statement of the new Minister of Defense (pictured on the right).
“Sturza directly hints that he will expel the Operational Group of Russian Troops (OGRF) from the territory of Transnistria. But how will he do this: our army is not capable of fighting even with Transnistria, let alone with Russia. Although a third of the country's budget is spent on defense. Today the situation in the national economy is such that an austerity regime is being introduced: 218 schools have been closed in recent years, and this year the state apparatus has been seriously reduced. We have problems with paying pensions and salaries. And Sturza is going to rearm the army. And bring the country under the NATO umbrella. Knowing that 70% of the population is against such integration, previous prime ministers suppressed such statements by defense ministers. But the current First Minister Pavel Filip did not correct his minister. And I supported his promise to open a NATO office in Chisinau this year,” said member of the Moldovan Parliament Bogdan Tirdea, commenting on the situation.
