Moldovan experts talk about the “Transnistrovization” of Ukraine as a method of putting pressure on Kyiv
Chisinau, June 09 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) – If the crisis in Ukraine does not develop into a serious armed conflict, the term “Transnistrovization” will become relevant for this country. This scenario for the development of the situation will make it possible to put pressure on Kyiv through territories where frozen conflicts remain, as is happening in the Republic of Moldova.

This opinion was expressed by a Moldovan expert, director of the Center for Analysis and Political Consultations Politicon Anatol Taranu, speaking during the debate on the topic “Moldo-Ukrainian relations in the new conditions of geopolitics and regional security”, organized by the IPN news agency together with Radio Moldova with the support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
He believes that “the Transnistrian conflict is being fully used by the Kremlin to put pressure on Moldova,” although this did not force the leadership of the Republic of Moldova to abandon the European course.
Taranu said that the conflict has a negative impact on the development of the country, and the same awaits Ukraine. Everything depends on how Kyiv manages to resolve the current crisis in the country, he emphasized.
Another expert, Executive Director of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT) Igor Botan was the first to use the term “Transnistrovization” in relation to Ukraine.
The expert believes that Russia, in an effort to prevent the advance of the EU and NATO on the territory of the former USSR, is creating problems in post-Soviet states such as the Republic of Moldova, and now Ukraine.
He said that Moldova cannot hope for full integration into the European space because of the Transnistrian conflict, because the EU already has the example of Cyprus before its eyes and does not want to see another similar state in its composition. The desire to join NATO should be viewed from the same angle: the North Atlantic Alliance does not accept countries that have conflicts or uncontrolled territories, the expert said.
“When I talk about the possible “Transnistrovization” of Ukraine, I mean the transformation of Ukraine into something similar to what we have in the Republic of Moldova. The conflict will enter a latent phase, which will take a lot of time and energy from Kyiv and its European partners. And we are aware of the problems that Moldova faces when it comes to implementing the association agreement with the EU in conditions where the Transnistrian region has a different position. What is happening in Ukraine is even more serious because it is a country with a population of 45 million, a country with eternal problems, lying in the very heart of Europe,” Botan noted.
“The Pridnestrovians admit that Russia spends a whole billion on them a year. And all this, as I understand it, until we mature and turn to Russia with a request to accept Moldova into the Eurasian Union or something similar,” he added.
Ambassador of Ukraine to Moldova Sergey Pirozhkov, in turn, said that the cause of the crisis in his country was the fundamental issues of self-identification of the inhabitants of Ukraine. Due to the fact that as a result of the collapse of the USSR, the Ukrainian people received an independent country without much effort, they have not yet developed the instinct to fight for their independence, the diplomat noted. This is why people do not know how to react to Russia’s aggressive actions, IPN reports.
