Chisinau, July 28 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) – Farmers from the northern regions of Moldova, outraged by the ban on the import of fruits to Russia, last Saturday went out to protest and blocked for half an hour the highway leading to the customs point “Ataki - Mogilev-Podolsky” on Moldovan-Ukrainian border.

They demanded to denounce the association agreement with the EU and resume negotiations with Moscow on the export of Moldovan products to Russia.

The protesters told RIA Novosti that the action was precautionary in nature. They intend to hold a mass rally in Chisinau and “close off highways of national importance, as well as a number of customs points near the border with Ukraine” for a much longer time if the government does not reach an agreement with the Russian Federation and the export of products is not resumed.

Farmers said that they were already suffering huge losses because they had taken out loans from banks and entered into contracts for the supply of products to Russian regions. The Moldovan government is going to compensate the costs of farmers, but allocates only 20 million lei for these purposes, and this “looks like a mockery,” the participants of the action noted.

“We demand that the government urgently begin negotiations with Russia to resume exports. It is also necessary to denounce the association agreement. There was no referendum on the people’s consent to join the EU; the opinion of the majority of the country’s residents was ignored by the authorities,” said one of the demonstrators.

Rosselkhoznadzor introduced temporary restrictions on the import of fresh fruit from the Republic of Moldova from July 18. Russia previously warned Moldova about a possible transition from the free trade regime to the most favored nation regime after Chisinau ratifies the association agreement with the European Union.
