The pro-European bloc ACUM and the Democratic Party of Moldova, whose government has been marked by a series of anti-Russian moves, have recently been vying with each other to assure the public of their desire to be friends with Russia.

The reason is that, according to the Constitution of Moldova, the time allotted for the creation of a parliamentary coalition and the formation of a government is running out.

The president could dissolve parliament as early as next week. The only way for Democrats and ACUM to avoid early elections is to please President Igor Dodon’s Socialist Party and the Kremlin that supports it.

Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Government Dmitry Kozak, who recently visited Chisinau, spoke in favor of creating a temporary coalition of socialists and ACUM. Proud pro-Europeans not only ran to see a Russian politician under EU sanctions, but also obediently agreed to vote for socialist speaker Zinaida Greceanii.

“Politicians in parliament are starting to speak without Russophobia and other fascist elements. If we speak against the Romanians, or against the West, or against Russia, this is fascism in any case. Many of my colleagues think so. Our party “Dignity and Truth” (part of ACUM – Ed.) is not an anti-Russian party,” ACUM deputy Vladimir Bolea said on the NTV Moldova TV channel.

Socialist MP Bogdan Tsyrdea, who was present in the studio, immediately suggested that he return the status of the second state language to Russian.

“We’ll negotiate,” the pro-European retorted.

The unexpected love for Russia that awakened among the leaders of the ACUM bloc went so far that they ignored the recommendation of European Commissioner Johannes Hahn not to meet with Kozak, since he is on the sanctions list.

“In the ACUM bloc, despite its pro-Europeanism, there are politicians who have sympathies for Russia, but hide them. Most likely, they put pressure on the leaders of the bloc to meet with Kozak. Even Mr. Nantoi (deputy Oazu Nantoi, known for his anti-Russian statements - Ed) now really wants to meet with the Russian Ambassador and had a very nice conversation with him,” said political scientist Corneliu Ciurea on the Moldovan Channel 21.

And although Kozak in Chisinau made it clear that the Kremlin would like a coalition of socialists and pro-Europeans, the Democratic Party, which is actually the property of the oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, does not lose hope. The “master of Moldova” himself, against whom a criminal case was opened in Russia, obtained an audience with the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, which was immediately reported by the press service of the Democratic Party.

And today, Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party Vladimir Chebotar assured journalists that his party wants to be friends with Russia.

“We want to improve relations with both the Russian Federation and other neighbors...” said Chebotar.

This statement sounds strange if we remember that the Democratic government banned Russian television channels and did not allow not only Moscow journalists and political scientists into the country, but even Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin. However, Moldovan experts were not at all surprised by this change of shoes.

“I have a lot of friends in the Democratic Party. When I asked them why you are butting heads with Russia, you once signed an agreement with United Russia. They say: old man, we ourselves understand that this is wrong, but we can’t do anything. I saw a lot of politicians in informal settings. All their Russophobia is superficial,” journalist Valery Demidetsky said on NTV Moldova.

At the same time, he believes that the Kremlin will not forget or forgive the Russophobic demarches of the democrats.

“In the Kremlin, all moves are recorded, nothing is allowed there. You can’t think that you can do something nasty to them and they will forget. They have a large embassy here, people there don’t eat bread in vain. If tomorrow the Kremlin blesses this coalition, no one will understand. Everyone will decide that they can behave as they please,” Demidetsky noted.

Today it will become known which of these newly minted lovers of Russia the socialists will choose. Yesterday, President of Moldova Igor Dodon was forced to interrupt his visit to St. Petersburg and fly to Chisinau. Before leaving, he announced the creation of a coalition today.
