Moldovan authorities renamed Transnistria
Alexey Logofet) –
From now on, in official documents of the Republic of Moldova, the term “Transnistria” will be replaced by the term “Transnistrian region” (with a small letter).
This decision was made by the Moldovan government on the initiative of Deputy Prime Minister for “reintegration” Oleg Serebryan.
The government discussed a resolution “on regulating the movement of goods and services that are the object of foreign trade activities of economic agents of Transnistria, as well as their provision of electronic communications networks and services.”
“The project is aimed at optimizing the process of providing public services to business entities in the eastern regions of the country, gradually bringing their activities to the strict requirements of the national regulatory framework and standardizing trade and economic requirements on both banks of the Dniester,” said Viorel Garaz, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization of the Republic of Moldova .
Deputy Prime Minister for “reintegration” Oleg Serebrian proposed to exclude the term “Transnistria” from the government decree as a designation of “territories not under the control of the constitutional authorities of the Republic of Moldova.”
“The term appears in several regulations, including the law passed by the then Parliament. However, in the Government Action Plan for 2023 we used the term “Transnistrian region”. We propose to use this term, to introduce this modification, namely the “Transnistrian region” with a small letter to designate territories not under the control of the constitutional authorities,” Serebryan said.
This proposal was fully supported by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Dorin Recean.
“We must continue to work on the integration of economic agents from the left bank of the Dniester into the economic space and, attention, also into the tax space of the Republic of Moldova,” said the head of the Moldovan government.
Previously, Pridnestrovian entrepreneurs who received registration in Moldova enjoyed tax benefits to avoid double taxation. Transnistria itself was recognized by the Moldovan authorities as a legal entity with the right of foreign economic activity in accordance with the Moscow Memorandum of 1997 (the “Primakov Memorandum”), signed by the then President of the Republic of Moldova, Petr Lucinschi.
Pridnestrovie is a participant in the peacekeeping operation on the Dniester and a party to the negotiation process for a settlement in the 5+2 format.
