Moldovan Zaromanians hope that the Russian language will forever lose its status
The socialist faction in the Moldovan parliament introduced a bill that would require citizens to choose a language of communication in relations with government authorities - Romanian or Russian, but this will only strengthen pro-Romanian sentiments.
The correspondent of PolitNavigator reports this in a commentary to Nezavisimaya Gazeta, stated by the former vice-chairman of the National Liberal Party, which advocates the accession of Moldova to Romania, the head of the Chisinau Center for Strategic Studies and Political Consulting, Anatol Tsaranu.
He noted that the Russian language retains its status as a language of interethnic communication, enshrined in law, but in 2018 the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova recognized this law as archaic, but the parliament did not repeal it.
“The law on Russian as a language of interethnic communication was adopted in 1989 and then became a kind of compromise. But today a new generation of Moldovan citizens has grown up who do not speak Russian. They are against the proposed amendment to the law. And for expanding the scope of the Romanian language. Against this background, pro-Romanian sentiments are intensifying. The number of supporters of Moldova joining Romania is growing,” the expert said.
This, he said, is not taken into account by the socialists, led by their leader Igor Dodon, who lost to Romanian citizen Maia Sandu in the presidential elections, and are counting on passing their initiative through parliament.
“If we consider that the Shor party, with which Igor Dodon has relations, has 14 mandates, then the expectations of the socialists become clear. The two parties have 51 votes, enough to make the language bill law. But even if the voting goes as expected for the PSRM, then parliamentary elections will follow. The communists and “Our Party” of Renato Usatii will participate in them. They are playing on the left electoral field and will deprive the socialists of a considerable number of votes. In the new parliament, the Russian language will lose its status. And forever,” hopes Tsaranu.
