The Moldovan archbishop banned deputies from Sandu's party from receiving communion in Orthodox churches
Archbishop Markell of Balti and Falesti prohibited deputies of the ruling Action and Solidarity (PAS) party from taking communion in all churches and monasteries of the diocese entrusted to him.
He stated this after Maia Sandu’s associates voted for ratification of the Istanbul Convention, which, in addition to additional protection of women’s rights, provides guarantees for the LGBT community, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Those who voted for the soul-destroying law are prohibited from receiving Holy Communion in churches included in the Balti and Falesti diocese of the Orthodox Church of Moldova until Pentecost Sunday 2022,” says the appeal published on the diocese’s website.
Earlier, a group of priests from the same diocese called on Archbishop Markell to “release them from the obligation to pray to God for the leadership of the country.”
“We are deeply outraged by the vote and promulgation of the Istanbul Convention, where the current government directly attacks the morals and souls of our children, scattering what we, parents, have collected these years,” the appeal said.
PAS press secretary Aurika Jardan wrote on her Facebook that she found the priests' statement funny. She officially called for prayers for the souls of victims of domestic violence.
Several European countries such as Hungary, Turkey, Bulgaria, Russia, Latvia, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine refused to sign the Istanbul Convention.
