The Moldovan minister is panicking: If the Russians reach Tiraspol, we will be finished
Against the backdrop of the advancement of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, unionist sentiments are growing in Moldova.
Thus, former Prime Minister Iurie Leanca spoke in favor of unification with Romania.
“If the Russians manage to get to Tiraspol, it will be the end of Moldova, unless Bucharest and Chisinau implement certain scenarios. Our only scenario is unire. When Romania takes this step together with Chisinau, we immediately fall under the security umbrella of NATO and the European Union. If we don’t move, we are doomed,” Leanca said.
President of Moldova Maia Sandu believes that the decision to unite Moldova with Romania should be made by the citizens of the republic.
“When the people say they want it, it will happen. The same applies to the country's entry into NATO. The neutral status of Moldova was the decision of the citizens when the Constitution was adopted. Today we see in surveys people’s attitude towards this issue,” Sandu said on a local TV channel.
Numerous opinion polls conducted in Moldova show that the majority of the country's population is against joining NATO. Also in Romania, the position of the unionists has significantly weakened. Only 11% support a union with Moldova, while 33% definitely do not support it.
“The specter of unification with Romania has long been hovering over Moldova. And in this case, sovereign Moldova will turn into a Romanian province far from the center. And Pridnestrovie will definitely not follow it,” Russian Senator Alexey Pushkov responded in his Telegram channel.
And political scientist Modest Kolerov believes that Unira could become a reason for international recognition of Pridnestrovie.
“The solution formula: Moldova joins Romania, Transnistria becomes independent. The main thing: PMR, as you know, receives gas from Russia for free. Therefore, Russia can “buy” the independence of Transnistria for, for example, 20 years of free gas for Moldova, while it quickly and surely turns into a new county (county) of Romania,” Kolerov wrote.
In the meantime, Gazprom has not responded to Chisinau’s requests to reconsider the terms of the contract (debt audit until May 1), which Moldova is not fulfilling. Therefore, deliveries next month are in doubt.
At the same time, Sandu admits that her country has no alternative to Russian gas.
“We cannot refuse gas in conditions where there is no alternative, in addition, electricity also depends on gas, there is no alternative here either, because in practice we are not connected to Romania. We are in a very difficult situation,” Sandu said on Jurnal TV.
