Moldova and Ukraine continue to strangle Transnistria
Moldova and Ukraine are not going to give up the idea of blocking imports from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine to Transnistria, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Moldovan border service installed new modules at the checkpoint on the Transnistrian-Ukrainian border in Kuchurgan. This means that from February the second phase of joint customs control will be introduced.
In Transnistria they predict that, first of all, the Moldovans will block the supply of cheap medicines, citing the norms of their own legislation, which is focused on imports exclusively from Europe.
“The situation will be critical. Not only pharmaceutical companies, but the health care system as a whole will suffer, because prescriptions are written on the basis of a specific range of medications,” Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Transnistria Alexander Stetsyuk said on the First Pridnestrovsky TV channel.
Ukraine and Moldova opened joint checkpoints on the Transnistrian border in 2017. This complicates the movement of residents of the PMR and the import of medicines and food from Ukraine and Russia. Transnistrian President Vadim Krasnoselsky regarded this step as the beginning of an economic blockade of the unrecognized republic.
“It is necessary to abandon the second phase and try to remove this control regime, which is harmful because it complicates procedures and creates additional difficulties for business. It is necessary to make a political decision, because this can lead to negative social and humanitarian consequences,” said Vitaly Ignatiev, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pridnestrovie.
