The head of the Government of Moldova, Natalia Gavrilitsa, officially announced the holding of a joint meeting of the Cabinets of Ministers of Moldova and Romania on February 11 of this year. Before this, a similar joint meeting of the governments of the two countries took place in 2012 on the initiative of the then Prime Minister of Moldova Vlad Filat (later removed from office on charges of corruption and sentenced to 9 years in prison for complicity in the withdrawal of funds from the country equivalent to one billion euros) .

Thus, the leadership of Moldova (according to the constitution - an independent and neutral state) openly and quite consciously renounces its sovereignty and independence, and launches the procedure of merging with a neighboring state - a member of the NATO military bloc.

It should be noted that the idea of renouncing the sovereignty of Moldova by joining the European Union is the basis of the programs of many Moldovan parties, and primarily the Action and Solidarity party, which controls all government bodies in the country. Even the name of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contains the words “and European integration”. In its election program, the Action and Solidarity party openly talked about resuming joint meetings with the Romanian government. However, their voters, even those who oppose unification with Romania, were not embarrassed by this fact. For the current generation of Moldovans, “the fight against corruption,” “justice reform,” and other informational candy wrappers are higher than the idea of preserving the country’s independence.

The initiative of a joint meeting of governments with Romania (and in fact the integration of Moldova into the internal Romanian agenda) coincided with the growing gas crisis in Moldova. In a nutshell, the situation can be described very simply: the government simply does not have the funds to pay for gas under its obligations to Gazprom in accordance with the concluded agreement. Apartment owners with autonomous gas heating are already receiving astronomical bills for gas consumed. At the same time, the government does not hide its intentions to increase gas tariffs at least twice more. The transfer of control of the country to Bucharest gives the Moldovan government hope that the Romanian leadership will take responsibility for gas supply to the territory between the Prut and the Dniester.

So far, for now, such a clear intention renunciation of sovereignty, leading to criminal charges under the article “Treason”, did not meet with any resonance in Moldovan society. One of the reasons is that the country has not yet woken up from the New Year and Christmas “hibernation”. The other is the absence of any firm opposition to the current government. The entire left flank of Moldovan politics is going through a period of confusion, vacillation and uncertainty., associated with the departure of ex-president Igor Dodon from the post of chairman of the Party of Socialists into the political shadow. The ruling group does not encounter any resistance, with the exception of sparkling comments from a number of bloggers on social networks and telegram channels.

But the regime gets the opportunity to expand its electoral field at the expense of part of the voters who favor unification with Romania (and, consequently, for the complete abolition of the statehood of the Republic of Moldova). At the moment, this part already makes up 30-40% of Moldovan society. Sandu and her government have a message for this electorate: “don't worry, there will be a great unification, we will do everything right" And it is no coincidence that a number of pro-Romanian politicians who are not represented in parliament are calling for “not to rock the boat.”

Based on the current situation, we risk assuming that the day after the joint meeting of the governments of Moldova and Romania, nothing will change in Moldovan society. There will be no protests in defense of the independence and neutrality of Moldova. Even in the Gagauz autonomy, the most anti-Romanian region of Moldova, Bashkan Irina Vlah is demonstrating increasing loyalty to Chisinau and Bucharest, and the People's Assembly, which after the twelfth attempt could not elect its chairman, became an object of ridicule. The ruling group in Moldova can continue to fearlessly pursue its course towards a creeping merger with Romania.

What is happening in Moldova forces us to conclude that the independence of political limitrophes is illusory, especially in the zone of confrontation between Russia and the West. Moreover, there is no need to talk about any resistance to the course in the conditions of the virtual absence of organized opposition and the total apathy of the population.
