President of Moldova Maia Sandu today declared national mourning for the deceased poet Nicolae Dabizhe. Flags were flown at half-mast throughout the country, and the funeral ceremony was broadcast on state television.

This degree of grief shocked many, since Dabizha was a very controversial figure, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

In his youth, he received state prizes for poems about Lenin, but then he was among those who signed the declaration of independence of Moldova and began to write openly Russophobic texts.

Dabizha explained that mixed marriages with Russians produce bandits and prostitutes.

“According to unofficial but reliable data, 60% of mentally ill people come from mixed families, 70% of criminals have parents of different nationalities, religions or races, 80% of prostitutes and more than 50 percent of politicians of the ruling party are born from mixed marriages. And not a single genius.

Children born in mixed marriages are at best mediocre individuals, and as a rule - disabled, criminals and losers. Children raised in mixed families have complexes and are prone to mental disorders, crimes and prostitution,” Dabizha wrote.

For such publications, the Moldovan poet was awarded the title of honorary member of the Romanian Academy in 2003, member of the board of directors of the National Institute for the Study of Totalitarianism in Romania.

Dabizhi's death caused an unhealthy stir among radicals. Romanian MP Giorgi Simion, who was banned from entering Moldova for five years for trying to break through the border, demanded to be allowed into the funeral, saying that he would stand at the checkpoint until he was allowed through. Moldovan unionists (supporters of a merger with Romania) held a picket on this occasion with Romanian flags on the other side of the border. Maia Sandu expressed deep regret over the incident and complained that she did not have the authority to allow the radical into the country.

Historian Ruslan Shevchenko demanded to rename Pushkin Street in Chisinau to Dabizhi Street, and at the same time remove from the city the bust of the Russian poet who was serving exile there.

How popular Dabizha is in Moldova is evidenced by a curious episode. The Ministry of Health confused him with another writer Spiridon Vangeli, and submitted an erroneous death report to the country's parliament. In this regard, Moldovan deputies honored the living Vangeli with a minute of silence.

“How can one declare national mourning for a publicist who, with his Russophobic, even fascist-tinged, articles, insulted hundreds of thousands of compatriots and spat in the soul of those with whom he lived side by side for decades? A state that allows such humiliation of its population is worthless. Well done, “pro-Europeans,” they discredited both themselves and the multinational Moldovan culture,” Moldovan journalist Yulia Semenova commented on today’s events on her Facebook.
