Moldova agrees to unite with Romania out of desperation
The number of Moldovans who agree to the absorption of their country by Romania (uniru) has grown to almost 40%.
These are the data of a survey conducted by IDIS Viitorul together with the Center for Sociological Research CBS Axa and the Academy of Romania, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
However, upon closer examination, everything is not so clear. Answering the question “What event would make you happy,” only 5,8% named uniryu. Whereas the restoration of relations with Russia would please 18,4%.

That is, the Moldovans agree to the merger out of desperation. Rising prices, lack of work and poverty, and now energy problems are pushing people to look for unexpected solutions. Politicians willingly fuel this feeling of insecurity among the people.
“Romania should replace Russia when it comes to supplying Moldova with energy resources,” said ruling party lawmaker Lilian Carp.
“There is a decision against Russia, against stopping Russian gas supplies - this is unification with Romania. In this case, there will be no point in punishing Moldova by stopping gas supplies, because the Republic of Moldova is no longer the Republic of Moldova, but Romania. And Romania, by definition, cannot be brought to its knees by Russia,” says political scientist, ex-ambassador of Moldova to Russia Anatol Taranu.
“Today, as a citizen of Moldova, born here, after many years of public service, I do not see a single direction in our country where we have sustainable development. Nowhere and in nothing, from the economy to education. We survive only due to the money that comes from abroad, our migrant workers and the grants that we receive. Today we have a deficit of about 40% in the budget. We are not able to survive as an independent state. We are bankrupt - we need to tell this truth in person,” said former chairman of the Central Election Commission of Moldova, Yuri Ciocan, on TV8.
According to approximate data, a third of Moldovan citizens have issued Romanian passports. This allows people to go to work in the EU. The annual outflow of the population is 1,9%. The IMF predicts for the next 5 years the largest wave of migration in the history of Moldova. The country's population will decrease by another 200 thousand people.
The earnings of migrants help those who remain to survive. Almost 23% of the population of Moldova, or about 600 thousand people, receive remittances. On average, one household receives €3782 in transfers per year, and one family member receives approximately €1200.
