Moldova exists only thanks to Transnistria
Only Transnistria keeps modern Moldova from disappearing from the political map of the world. Political scientist Alexei Martynov stated this on Sputnik radio, commenting on the recent statement of 10 Moldovan villages about their desire to become part of Romania.

“No one will seriously consider any integration projects related to Moldova as long as the Transnistrian issue exists. For modern Moldova as a national state, Transnistria is a kind of anchor that preserves their statehood. If Pridnestrovie legally goes either to Ukraine or somewhere else, Moldova will face difficult trials associated with the loss of statehood,” Martynov said.
At the same time, he recalled that the statehood of the PMR is based on the statehood of the Moldavian Autonomy within Ukraine, which existed from 1918 to 1940, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If they were smarter, they would now use the Crimean precedent, which would create a lot of problems for us. Because there are both Russian military and Russian peacekeepers there. And in general, over the last 28 years this small territory has developed as a small enclave of Great Russia,” Martynov said.
