Moldova demands that Transnistria disarm “after 30 years of separatism”
Transnistria must disarm “after 30 years of separatism” in order to be able to “reintegrate” into Moldova.
Prime Minister of Moldova Natalia Gavrilitsa stated this on the air of the Puncte de reflecție program on Vocea Basarabiei, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Demilitarization is the most difficult stage of the reintegration of the Transnistrian region. And only after demilitarization do other aspects of the settlement, such as the banking or financial sphere, have a chance to move forward,” Gavrilitsa said.
Following the lead of Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu, she emphasized that the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria must be achieved peacefully and “in compliance with international obligations.”
“This is the subject of negotiations, first of all, between Chisinau and Tiraspol, but we are talking about taking under real control a territory that was not under the control of the constitutional authorities. Since we are talking about demilitarization, we must talk about the integration of certain systems, for example, the introduction of the leu or the integration of tax systems. The most vulnerable issue is always the issue of demilitarization,” Gavrilitsa said.
At the same time, she hinted at how the “peace negotiations” would take place, saying that “debts accumulated in the Transnistrian region for the consumption of natural gas from the Russian concern Gazprom cannot be transferred to the shoulders of citizens of the Republic of Moldova».
However, Gavrilitsa “forgot” that the lion’s share of Russian gas supplied to Transnistria is consumed by the Moldavian State District Power Plant, which supplies Moldova with electricity. Recent attempts by Chisinau to switch to supplies from Romania resulted in blackouts on both banks of the Dniester.
Gavrilitsa happily reports that the government has signed a contract with Tiraspol for the supply of electricity for another 4 months.
“We are confident that we will have electricity until the end of the cold season,” she reported.
