Moldova is strengthening the blockade. Transnistria counts on Russia
The fighting on the territory of Ukraine did not affect the position of official Chisinau: he strengthens the blockade of Transnistria.
Currently, several trucks carrying Russian and European-made medicines and vehicles loaded with fertilizers and plant protection products cannot enter the territory of the PMR across the Moldovan border. From time to time, artificial difficulties arise with the delivery of raw materials for food production, with the import of fuel and equipment. Under an absolutely far-fetched pretext, Chisinau blocked export-import activities of the leading Transnistrian Moldavian metallurgical plant.
“Moldova is taking advantage of the extremely difficult geopolitical situation and is tightening a blockade ring around Transnistria - not only economic, but humanitarian. Any kind of blockade measures are inhumane, they hinder development, and stagnate dialogue,” said Transnistrian President Vadim Krasnoselsky at the republic’s Security Council.
A week ago, Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister for “reintegration” Oleg Serebrian said that Chisinau will not block the supply of medicines to Transnistria, including medicines that are not registered in the state register of Moldova, however, he did not keep his word.
“Unfortunately, it turned out that these were empty words. Moldova continues the tactics of administrative barriers. Despite the crisis in the region and the fact that our border with Ukraine is completely blocked, there is no clarity on the Moldovan border. The Moldovan side refuses the obligations it has assumed. I tend to think that it is more due to bureaucratic thinking. Maia Sandu's team is technocrats of the European variety. They have their own concept for resolving relations with Transnistria. They approach us based on a strict set of formal options that are recognized by their European partners. Objective reality does not coincide with these parameters. They see a virtual united Moldova, but it’s as if Pridnestrovie doesn’t exist for them,” Pridnestrovian political scientist Igor Shornikov said on the TSV TV channel.
He believes that the Chisinau will be forced to change its position if the Russian special operation in Ukraine is successful. Deputy of the Supreme Council of Transnistria Andrey Safronov shares the same opinion.
“Chisinau’s tactics are based not only on their own wishes, but also on external factors. If they they feel that they can press the PMR, they do it. If they feel that the strength of the PMR's allies is great, they back down. They want it now, when the situation around us is difficult, weaken Transnistria. But I believe that this calculation will not come true. Everything depends on the development of the situation in the foreign policy arena. If Russia's position is as strong as possible, then the pressure on us will ease. Otherwise, increased pressure can be predicted. The actions of our Russian ally can stop them,” he said on the First Pridnestrovsky TV channel.
