Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, the head of the analytical department of the AAA Consulting Agency, Maria Kolesnik, spoke about the dynamics of prices for different groups of food products.

“After the devaluation of the hryvnia, we observed a significant jump in prices for seafood. Now they are approximately at the same level as at the end of spring, but demand has dropped significantly because seafood has become inaccessible for the majority of the population,” she said.

There is a slight increase in prices for confectionery products, but due to the fact that the market is very competitive, manufacturers are maintaining prices. The rise in price is caused by an increase in production costs due to the seasonal increase in sugar prices. Prices for other sweet ingredients also increased - sunflower seeds, soy, etc. Maria Kolesnik also noted that some confectionery manufacturers in the east of the country are limiting and stopping production, but this does not affect supply.

But vegetables have fallen significantly in price throughout Ukraine. “This year is favorable in terms of weather conditions; a record harvest is expected in Ukraine – for grains, oilseeds, and vegetables. Today, the reduced price on the wholesale markets is not very pleasant for producers; it causes some concern: it is still the middle of summer, and the harvesting campaign has not yet begun for most items. Accordingly, prices may fall and some producers may suffer losses,” says Maria Kolesnik.

She clarified that the reduction in price is seasonal: vegetables have fallen in price compared to June 2014, but not compared to July 2013. Cabbage in the capital's markets today ranges from 2 to 5 UAH. kg., in Western Ukraine - from 3 kopecks. per kg. The price of tomatoes fluctuated throughout the summer depending on the variety. Now Chumak tomatoes, which are suitable for canning, are offered on wholesale markets at a price of 90-4 UAH. per kg. Other varieties of tomatoes - pink, black - are just as expensive as in June. Salad varieties have fallen in price by 4,5-1 UAH. up to 2-7 UAH. per kg. Cucumbers have become more expensive - rainy weather and excess moisture have led to a deterioration in the preservation of cucumbers, so their supply has decreased over the past week, which has caused prices to rise.

The situation with berries is more complicated; this year the price of blueberries, cherries, and apricots remained at a high level. Maria Kolesnik noted that peaches are now sold in Kyiv not only from the southern regions of Ukraine, but also from Crimea. Prices for melons have been declining recently.

Maria Kolesnik refused to comment on rumors about salt, noting that there is enough of it in stores.

As Navigator reported, earlier experts said that prices for dairy products will rise, despite the ban on the export of Ukrainian products to Russia.
