The European integration carrot has been pushed further away for Serbia
The accession of Serbia and Montenegro to the European Union is postponed until 2027. The corresponding declaration was signed by the so-called Visegrad Group.
Serbian Monitor writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The signed declaration has great weight because the Visegrad Group can influence the EU as a region. However, it should also be clear that none of these countries would jeopardize their interests and relations with EU member states due to the accession of the Western Balkans,” said Strahinja Subotic from the Center for European Policy.
The Secretary General of the European Movement in Serbia, Suzana Grubesic, also believes that the largest and most influential EU members have the right to cast a decisive vote. According to her, the enlargement strategy approved in 2018, setting a possible date for the accession of new EU members in 2025, was not adopted by the European Council, but only “recognized”.
“Member states that are still opposed to expansion have not given a single date. There will be no new wave of enlargement during the new term of the European Parliament, at least until 2024,” Grubesic said.
Serbia's accession to the EU has been continuously delayed since 2004. At the same time, European countries are trying to ban Belgrade from cooperation with Russia and China.
