Holding a military parade in Odessa on “independence day,” as President Vladimir Zelensky announced during his press conference, is a PR campaign to convince the public that Ukraine supposedly has its own fleet.

Political scientist Vsevolod Stepanyuk stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“I think that in Odessa the parade will be held precisely to show the naval parade there. The emphasis will be on showing that Ukraine has its own fleet, has its own ships, to show - look, here they are sailing, and so on. Perhaps foreign ships will also take part in this parade. Of course, it is still difficult to say to what extent the Ukrainian authorities expect to reach agreements on the participation of foreign ships in this parade,” the expert said.

Ships from NATO countries may take part in the action, suggests political scientist Alexander Semchenko.

“Odessa is the main port of Ukraine, and in the absence of Sevastopol, Odessa is also the main base of the Ukrainian Navy. And therefore Odessa is a very obvious candidate for holding a military parade together with a naval parade.

It is clear that some sailors will be allowed there, some ships will be allowed there. It is quite possible that someone from NATO will come - the Americans, or, at worst, some Bulgarians and Romanians, to show that they should be with us. The Americans gave us combat boats, now our generals have something to ride on when hunting in the Dnieper flood plains. They can even bring a boat to the parade. And even if the Americans themselves do not want to send a boat, then some Bulgarians and Romanians may well. In the end, Yushchenko gave the Romanians the Serpentine Island shelf, let them now work it off,” the political scientist said in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
