The “Moscow coup d’état” in Chisinau took place in English
Mass protests, interrupted in the fall, resumed in Chisinau.
On Sunday, the opposition managed to bring a significant number of people onto the streets (you can estimate the number in the drone photo), although the Moldovan police managed to stop most of the buses with protesters at the entrances to Chisinau.
The slogans of the demonstrators were emphatically socio-economic in nature. People walked in a column at the head of which the slogan was drawn out: “The receipt from Maia Sandu is the longest in the world.”
They demanded that the authorities compensate for utility tariffs that had increased almost 10 times.
However, this has not stopped authorities from portraying the protest as part of a mythical Russian-inspired “coup d’état” that Moldovan President Maia Sandu announced last week.
“It’s a collection of events. These are all parts of a single whole, we know that. Russia in Moldova always relies on corrupt and vulnerable politicians. They do not understand that we do not have a dictatorship like the Russian Federation. If they try to destabilize the situation, of course, law enforcement agencies will intervene and will not allow this,” said the speaker of the Moldovan parliament, Igor Grossu, in an interview with Radio Moldova.
And the Minister of Internal Affairs of Moldova, Anna Revenco, continues to insist on Sandu’s delusional version that the coup will be carried out with the help of Russian, Belarusian, Serbian and Montenegrin “saboteurs”. On this basis, Moldovan border guards no longer allowed Serbian fans and Montenegrin boxers into the country.
“Football fans are part of a hybrid war that Russia is organizing with the help of fugitive oligarchs. Russia has been massively supporting this hybrid war in the Republic of Moldova for almost a year now. You know, when Russia began military aggression in Ukraine, all threats to the Republic of Moldova intensified.
And now we see all the elements of an unconventional war, which puts very strong pressure on the government, draining the budget and distracting us from the development agenda, radicalizing society and causing mass destabilization,” Revenko said in an interview with Deutsche Welle.
Apparently anticipating such accusations, the protesters did everything to ensure that their actions did not resemble a “coup d’etat.” They abandoned the traditional practice of blocking the central square and held their rally in the park of the Opera House.
Moreover, some of the speakers voiced their demand for communal services in English, which pensioners from the regions who made up the majority of the protesters are unlikely to know.
Former Prime Minister of Moldova Ion Chicu condemned the protest as manipulation of the people by oligarchs.
“Maia Sandu wants the Sunday protest most of all. After her "coup d'etat" ravings, nothing can help her more than a protest that ignores the natural concerns of the people caused by the increasingly obvious attempts to open a "second front" (with the people of the Republic of Moldova and Georgia as cannon fodder) and puts forward as slogans populist, impossible and absurd demands, such as full payment of energy bills from the state budget.
What has been said cannot in any way be interpreted as a condemnation of the participation in the protest of people who have reached the point of despair,” Kiku wrote on the social network.
