Moscow political scientist: Lukashenko wants to infect as many people as possible
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, refusing to introduce overly strict quarantine measures, hopes for the development of collective immunity to COVID-19 among the country's residents.
This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets by Andrey Suzdaltsev, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Politics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics.
“Lukashenko continues to insist on holding mass events. Anyone can come to the country, the Victory Parade on May 9 has not been cancelled, shops are open, schoolchildren are invited to lessons, the football championship continues, and so on. And here comes an interesting point: one part of the population trusts the government and continues to live as usual, while the second part independently takes measures to protect itself,” the expert said.
“One gets the feeling that Lukashenko wants as many people as possible to become infected and to develop herd immunity. Then the number of infected people will decrease and he will say that his approach was correct. Alas, everyone in Belarus is accustomed to the fact that Lukashenko never admits his mistakes. Everything is fine with them and everyone is jealous of the experience of their country. There are those who understand that the situation is absurd, but there are also many who believe that Lukashenko is right.”
