Moscow is ready to watch the dying convulsions of the Ukrainian energy and metallurgy
With the blockade of Donbass, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has driven himself into a dead end, Ukrainian political scientist Dmitry Korneychuk writes in his blog, assessing the statement of the Russian President’s press secretary, who said that Russia sees no reason for a meeting in the “Normandy format”.

According to the expert, Moscow is waiting for the arrival of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to find out definitively whether the United States is ready to put pressure on Poroshenko to implement “Minsk”, and is also expecting a May meeting with Angela Merkel, who should convey the essence of her conversation with Trump regarding Ukraine and work out with Putin, a common strategy to “unfreeze” the Minsk agreements.
“Moscow is in no hurry. And for now I am ready to observe the dying convulsions of the Ukrainian energy and metallurgy without Donbass coal. The Kremlin wants to see: can Kyiv find alternative sources of coal supply? Will there be mass protests if rolling blackouts follow? Will unemployed metallurgists go to Kyiv? Will the dollar exchange rate in Ukraine become 40-50 UAH? All these factors will influence the Kremlin’s strategy towards Kyiv,” the political scientist notes.
“In general, Poroshenko has driven himself into a dead end with the blockade of Donbass. But in the end, all Ukrainians will be the ones to sort out the situation,” Korneychuk sums up.
