“The situation now is very favorable. There is a change of administrations in the USA, and therefore you can take advantage of the moment and start liberating the city. It is worth noting that both Syria and Russia have made and are making a lot of efforts to avoid civilian casualties. Thus, humanitarian corridors have been organized for civilians, and an amnesty law is in effect,” Bassam Abu Abdallah, director of the Damascus Center for Strategic Studies, told the publication.
The general director of the Institute of Regional Problems, Dmitry Zhuravlev, argues in the same vein.
“This is being done to present Trump with a fait accompli. The president-elect has repeatedly stated that he does not want to fight in Syria. But these were the words of the candidate during the election campaign, and the actual course may differ radically. On the other hand, the Syrians can expect the new American administration to normalize relations with Damascus. But in order to negotiate, they must have a trump card in their hands: control over the two most important cities of the country,” Zhuravlev emphasized.
