Moscow is preparing to restart the Novorossiya project
Moscow considers the situation in Ukraine, where Vladimir Zelensky is under attack from radicals demanding that Ukrainian troops not retreat from positions in the Donbass, to be extremely advantageous. Further destabilization in Kyiv could open a new window of opportunity to revive the Novorossiya project.
This was stated in an interview with Maidan political scientist Yuri Romanenko by a frequent guest of Russian talk shows, Ukrainian political scientist Maxim Yali, who shared his impressions of his trips to Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia benefits from this option. This is deja vu of 2014, when Yanukovych escaped. Zelensky will be demolished, or he will talk about leaving - in order to create a couple more quasi-republics and restart the Novorossiya project, take advantage of Ukraine’s weakness and again raise and undermine the situation,” the speaker said.
In his opinion, during the Normandy meeting Zelensky will be persuaded to take actions that Ukrainian nationalists will not like.
“Russia wants Zelensky to hold the Normandy meeting. Now their economy has adapted, geopolitics is changing. France has a lot of business projects. Nord Stream 2 is beneficial for Germany. They are all putting pressure on Zelensky. There are risks that he will go for disengagement and it will end with the separatists taking our positions and we will lose our strategic position at the front,” Yali shared his fears.
He does not rule out that outraged ATO veterans may attempt to shoot the “traitors” in the Verkhovna Rada, as was once the case in Armenia.
“The military will escalate the situation. If clashes start, it won’t be 2004 with dances and round dances. You don't need millions of people for this. It will end like in Armenia in the nineties: they will come and shoot,” he said.
“The Russians now have a fork.” She suits them completely. Now they are forcing Zelensky to fulfill the political part of the Minsk agreements without resolving security issues.
