Moscow, with a slight flick of the valve, showed the unreliability of transit through Ukraine
Gazprom made official Kyiv nervous: under the pretext of reducing demand in Europe, Moscow reduced the volume of gas supplies for transit through Ukraine, as well as the pressure at the entrance to the system.
As a result, to ensure transit to the EU, Naftogaz had to urgently pump out gas stored for the winter from its storage facilities. In recent days, Kyiv has been spending approximately half the amount of fuel that Ukraine is now purchasing for reverse from Slovakia, Poland and Hungary.

The head of Naftogaz, Andrei Kobolev, called Gazprom’s actions “blackmail.” The Russian side did not agree with this assessment. “Maintaining pressure is Ukraine’s problem; we have supplied as much transit gas at the entrance to the system as we must receive at the exit,” the Kommersant newspaper quotes a source at Gazprom.
