“After three years of economic decline and strife with the West, Russia's situation appears to be improving. The vote in favor of Brexit in June this year exposed deep divisions in the European Union, leading Moscow to hope that dissenting members could undermine the consensus on sanctions imposed on Russia in a future vote on extending them. Although EU members voted unanimously in June to expand anti-Russian measures, upcoming elections on the continent could undermine the unity of the bloc,” the report notes.
“Meanwhile, in the United States, Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election has opened a potential path for a thaw in relations between the United States and Russia and even, perhaps, for Washington to lift anti-Russian sanctions,” Stratfor does not rule out. The changing political situation in Brussels and Washington could give the Kremlin some leeway to increase its influence in the former Soviet Union, forcing countries on Russia's periphery to rethink their foreign policy positions.
At the same time, American analysts believe that Russia’s return to the former Soviet republics “will be much smaller than it was in the late 2000s, when the Russian economy was growing rapidly and its political system was free from the problems that currently trouble it.” .
“Nevertheless, the political transformations taking place in Europe and the United States may provide Moscow with more space to restore its position throughout Eurasia,” Stratfor concludes.
