The head of the Ministry of Energy, Alexander Novak, told reporters about this on Monday.
“As Alexey Miller has now stated, the transit contract with Ukraine will not be extended after 2019,” the minister is quoted as saying Interfax.
“Now all efforts are aimed at implementing the construction of a gas transmission system on the border of Turkey and Greece, and delivery to European consumers in South-Eastern and Central Europe through this route,” Novak added.
In his speech at the Valdai Club conference, Miller threatened opponents of the South and Turkish Stream, seeking to maintain the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, with a cessation of supplies. According to him, the blocking of South Stream was intended only to “preserve the status quo in transit through Ukraine.”
The current transit contract with Ukraine is valid until 2019. After this, Gazprom intends to reduce transit through this country through the Black Sea bypass.
“Our competitive advantage is that we can pause if we are forced to do so. And we can keep it for quite a long time,” emphasized Alexey Miller.
