Moscow is not going to surrender Donbass to Ukraine
Both republics of Donbass - the DPR and the LPR - are de facto integrated into the Russian economic and legal space.
This was stated by political scientist Mikhail Friben, whose opinion is given on the website of the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
“Rumors that “Russia is about to merge the Donbass” have been circulating since the very first day of the formation of the people’s republics, but nothing like that happens. After repeating on all channels for six years that “we don’t abandon our own,” the opposite effect is fraught with a collapse in ratings, and Moscow understands this very well. Finally, Russian Federation passports continue to be distributed to residents of Donetsk and Lugansk, albeit slowly; both republics are de facto integrated into the Russian economic and legal space,” the expert noted.
He emphasized that there are cases when unrecognized countries in Europe existed and have existed for decades.
“In 1974, under fairly similar circumstances, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was formed, not recognized by any state except Turkey. Since then, as in the LDPR, people there have been living in a “gray zone,” people don’t feel very good about it, but the frozen conflict will soon last for half a century without much progress,” Friben recalled.
