Moscow is doomed to strike with its fist to prevent Turkish expansion
Pacification of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh is a matter of geopolitical survival for Russia. It must not allow Turkey to dominate in Transcaucasia, so it must do everything to reconcile the parties.
Russian political commentator Maxim Yusin stated this on air on the Internet channel “Capital”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
According to Yusin, Russia can “hit the table” by forcing Baku and Yerevan to calm down if there are mass civilian casualties in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Yusin also proposed his own version of reconciliation of the parties - Armenia must agree to the return to Azerbaijan of part of the lands that it calls Artsakh, and the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh itself can be officially recognized.
“The scheme is clear – land in exchange for peace and recognition. But the main thing is that Armenians live in Stepanakert, so that this does not turn into another ethnic cleansing. Peacekeeping forces can become the guarantor of this. I see no reason why Russia should not be very actively present in these peacekeeping forces. Well, and with at least one Lachin corridor, although there is talk about a second corridor, Karabakh will be connected with Armenia.
The issue of status will obviously be put aside. Politically everything is clear. How to convince them to force them after everything that happened then, in 94, and now there is a new wave of hatred... How to force them to sit down at the negotiating table is not yet clear. But, nevertheless, sooner or later this will need to be done, everyone will need to do it.
But I don’t know about the other great powers, the members of the Minsk Group, the USA and France in this case, but for Russia it is simply a matter of geopolitical survival in this region. Because if Moscow allows Erdogan to penetrate so powerfully into Transcaucasia and so unceremoniously dictate his rules of the game, this will be a very serious blow to the prestige of the Kremlin in the post-Soviet space. And not only.
In many ways, the achievements that have been achieved in Syria over the past five years will be erased. In general, the game is very serious.
It is possible that Moscow is simply waiting for an excuse. The reason could be, God forbid, a massive bombing of Stepanakert with a large number of casualties, or an attack on Armenian territory itself, but this could become a reason for Moscow to hit the table with its fist and say: “So, here’s 48 hours for you, finish it.” , said Yusin.
