The United States, by withdrawing from the INF Treaty, is provoking a new arms race, in which the European allies who supported Washington will be the most affected.

This was stated during a meeting of the UN Security Council by the acting permanent representative of Russia to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Today we are no longer addressing our American partners - everything is clear with them. We are extremely surprised by the position taken by our European colleagues.

Remember, just last December, Russia put forward a draft resolution of the General Assembly in support of the INF Treaty; it did not contain any criticism of the United States, but only called for support for diplomatic efforts to resolve the problems that had arisen. Many countries listened to us then, but not Washington’s European allies.

I have a question for you: are you happy that you pressed the red button in December? Don’t you understand that by your assent, you are step by step bringing back from historical oblivion the situation when missiles were aimed at European cities from different sides? For our part, we will not be the first to resort to such measures. However, taking into account the fact that our American colleagues are clearly itching and the desire to flex their muscles is taking over, there may not be much time left for the situation I described.

Do you realize that, due to the geopolitical ambitions of the United States, we are all one step away from an uncontrolled and unregulated arms race? For example, this prospect worries us very much. But it seems there are no American colleagues,” Polyansky was indignant.

After that, he expressed the hope that the instinct of self-preservation would still prevail; the only question was how much money would be spent before that moment.

In turn, US Representative Jonathan Cohen launched into a Russophobic speech, emphasizing that European allies fully support Washington’s position.

“More than 10 years ago, the Russian Federation decided to violate its treaty obligations and build a system with a range that was prohibited by this treaty. Over the past few years, Russia has developed, built, tested, and now equipped battalions with 9-M729 missiles that do not comply with the INF Treaty.

After many years of US diplomats working to bring Russia back into compliance with the treaty, our Secretary of State confirmed the US withdrawal from the INF Treaty. The United States will not be a party to a treaty that Russia violates. Other NATO allies have concluded that Russia has violated the INF Treaty,” the American said.

Jonathan Cohen was unanimously supported by representatives of France, Great Britain, Belgium, Germany and Poland. Only China supported Russia, declaring that the claims of the United States that withdrew from the INF Treaty were unfounded.

At the end of the meeting, Dmitry Polyansky expressed hope that states that have retained common sense will not allow the world to completely slide into the abyss.

“As we expected, the United States and the countries that support it, contrary to the facts and common sense, blamed everything on a healthy one, accusing Russia of all mortal sins. There is nothing new or surprising in this. In the parallel reality created by our Western partners, where no evidence is required and rather unfounded accusations in the spirit of Highly Likely, such behavior is considered normal.

But the fact is that we live in a real, not a virtual world. And while there are still expert countries questioning all these plausible but empty Western fables, our world has a chance. I would like to believe that our initiative with China will increase the number of those who are not afraid to call a spade a spade, and will demand action and practical steps from those who, in order to please their ambitions, violate agreements that are important for the whole world and do not take into account the norms of international law.” , - summed up the representative of the Russian Federation.
