Moscow leaves Poroshenko a loophole to retreat
The Kremlin reacted with relative restraint to Kyiv’s provocation near Avdievka in order to give Ukraine the opportunity to return to the mainstream of the Minsk process.

This opinion was expressed at a press conference in Kyiv by the director of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflict Studies, Mikhail Pogrebinsky.
“What Moscow definitely didn’t need was an aggravation. And it is no coincidence that Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the situation, said that, in his opinion, these were some kind of uncontrolled battalions. Throughout the week there was information about movements in neutral, the Ukrainian military said that they were moving step by step and would soon be near Debaltseve. It is clear that this did not happen without the commander-in-chief,” the political scientist is convinced.
“Nevertheless, the Kremlin says that the commander in chief has nothing to do with it. What does this mean? It seems like there is a chance to maintain the status quo so that we can continue to talk. And if we now officially say that the authorities in the person of Poroshenko are provoking a conflict, then we must somehow respond to this. And answering today is extremely unprofitable. We must try to negotiate with Trump. This is an important point that shows who is interested and who is not in aggravating the situation,” Pogrebinsky emphasized.
