Moscow takes over the initiative on Donbass at the UN
Ukraine initiated the convening of a special meeting of the UN General Assembly on February 20, dedicated to the situation in Donbass. Moscow acted proactively by proposing to discuss the Donbass issue at a meeting of the UN Security Council on February 18.
Kommersant writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Russian initiative will be considered on February 18 at an open meeting of the UN Security Council with the participation of an OSCE representative to analyze the implementation of the Minsk agreements, the failure of which Moscow blames on the Ukrainian side.
“The purpose of the discussion is to recall the content of the agreements and once again confirm that there is no alternative to the “Set of Measures...”. This is the only document that is accepted by everyone, and there is no other. Well, also to show what has been done, what has not been done and who is to blame for this,” an interlocutor at the Russian Foreign Ministry, dealing with the Ukrainian direction, told the publication.
According to him, nothing has been done, and “the keys to the settlement are in Kyiv.”
It is noteworthy that the message about the Russian initiative to raise the issue of Donbass in the UN Security Council appeared after it became known about Ukraine’s intention to bring the same topic, but with different emphasis, to the discussion of the UN General Assembly, as previously reported by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadim Prystaiko. Later, Ukrainian diplomats clarified that the discussion initiated by Kiev will take place on February 20 and will be held in the format of a special meeting “on the situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.”
In addition, the Russian initiative in Kyiv was declared “a proven trick of Russian diplomacy” and an attempt to “diffuse the attention of the world community and shift the emphasis.”
The publication notes that Kyiv began this year with statements about the need to revise the Minsk agreements - thus, the Ukrainian side, contrary to the agreements, first wants to regain control abroad, and then agree to elections in the LDPR.
“Moscow is categorically against both such a sequence and changes in agreements, so the diplomatic sparring planned at the UN is another round of confrontation. And Kyiv is right in asserting that it was not by chance that Moscow played ahead of the curve at the UN, essentially seizing the initiative. Thanks to this move, not only Russia, but also Ukraine will be discussed and condemned in New York,” the publication summarizes.
As PolitNavigator reported, the Russian Foreign Ministry explained that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky could not become president of the world and turned his political program into a circus.
