“Russia’s position is that the eastern part of Ukraine is a part of Ukraine, unlike Crimea, which ended up being part of Ukraine as a result of a historical incident,” said Alexey Pushkov, chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, on the radio station “Moscow Speaks”. According to him, today “no one questions that this is Ukrainian territory,” and everyone is absolutely clear that Russia does not lay claim to it.”

Alexey Chesnakov, head of the Center for Political Contexts and close to Vladislav Surkov, says that the future of Donbass depends on several factors. “Kiev does not yet have enough arguments to reintegrate Donetsk and Lugansk. The conditions currently proposed by Ukraine are unacceptable for the republics. Perhaps, if Kyiv is finally ready to work together, the republics will see themselves as part of Ukraine. But for this we need dialogue with them. If there is no such dialogue in the near future and Kyiv continues to ignore the republics as an independent party to the negotiation process, the DPR and LPR will accelerate their own state building without regard to Ukraine,” the political scientist warns.

Former DPR Prime Minister Borodai says that there are agreements between Akhmetov and the DPR: while the war is going on, all of Akhmetov’s enterprises work in exchange for the businessman exporting his products through the territory of Ukraine, selling them in Europe, and then sending humanitarian aid. It was because of this that the militia did not take Mariupol - supposedly the oligarch needed a port under the control of Ukraine to export his goods to Europe.

In addition, a source from Gazeta.Ru talks about tranches from Moscow: supposedly in March-April of this year 600 million rubles were transferred for social payments, but this is not enough. “The volume of humanitarian aid from Rinat Akhmetov significantly exceeds the level of Russian aid, which until recently often ended up on store shelves, while Akhmetov’s humanitarian aid fully reached the population,” the source claims.

“Today the authorities of the DPR and LPR do not have mass support, but they have military resources and rely on military supplies, which is reminiscent of the Karmal regime in Afghanistan,” says a source in the DPR. “How long the current structure of the DPR and LPR will last is unclear, since with the development of the Minsk process it will be destroyed and replaced either by Kiev or Moscow.”
