Moscow has not yet agreed to a meeting between Putin and Biden
A possible summit of the presidents of Russia and the United States, initiated by the American side, could take place in Switzerland, but so far the Russian Federation has not given its consent.
Kommersant writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Earlier it was reported that Joe Biden invited Vladimir Putin to meet in one of the European countries on June 15–16. At the same time, the newspaper claims, citing its informed interlocutors in Moscow, the Russian side is ready to work with the proposed dates.
“At the same time, the Kremlin has still not given the White House unequivocal consent to hold the summit. Moscow continues to weigh the pros and cons: on the one hand, the summit meeting could contribute to de-escalation in relations between the two countries, and on the other, there is a risk that Washington will try to use it for moralizing, including public ones,” the publication writes.
Sources say that much will become clearer this week in Reykjavik, where Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will appear on the sidelines of the Arctic Council ministerial meeting for the first time, who will discuss the modalities of the summit and, above all, its possible agenda.
The newspaper’s interlocutors also note that if the meeting takes place, Switzerland will be the “most likely” place. However, it was not possible to find out which specific city we are talking about.
The Kremlin did not officially comment on information regarding a possible summit.
Let us recall that previously the President of the United States stooped to dirty insults Russian leader Vladimir Putin, after which the Russian ambassador was recalled from Washington.
Then Biden rang Putin and proposed to meet on the territory of a third country to discuss problematic issues in relations between the two countries.
