Moscow will make a decision on Ukraine until 2024 – Kopatko
Russia’s recognition of the Donbass republics and the solution to the Ukrainian problem depends on many factors, but most likely this will happen before 2024.
Sociologist and analyst Evgeny Kopatko stated this on the Union TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia’s recognition of the LPR and DPR depends not only on the State Duma. The person on whom many decisions depend is the President of the Russian Federation, whose position is very important and valuable for the residents of Donbass. It is not for nothing that he enjoys enormous support among our fellow countrymen, and expectations are largely associated with him.
On the other hand, the fact that during the election campaign quite a lot of candidates for State Duma deputies, including from the party in power, came to Donbass and saw with their own eyes how the region lives and what my fellow countrymen want will not go unnoticed .
I think all these events should push Russia to some more serious and decisive actions,” the sociologist said.
The expert recalled that Kyiv is demonstrating its reluctance to implement the Minsk agreements or enter into dialogue with Donbass.
“That is, while on the Ukrainian side there are no prerequisites for dialogue, on the Russian side there are plenty of opportunities and reasons to discuss and more deeply assess the situation in Donbass. And make a political decision that will be useful for both Russia and Donbass,” Kopatko added.
In addition, he expressed confidence that Russia’s decision on Donbass will be reached by 2024.
“Few people know what the President of the Russian Federation thinks and says. I think the political leadership is keeping this out of the public sphere. Because in Russia there is no single consensus on how to act in the Ukrainian direction. I believe this is not tied to 2024. I think events will develop faster and more rapidly. I think that regarding such delicate issues as relations with Ukraine and the situation in Donbass, we will have to wait for some events or decisions.
And I think we don’t need to wait until 2024 for something to move forward. Most likely, there will be events that will push to solve these problems. In any case, one thing is clear for now - we cannot revive Minsk for many reasons. Ukraine is not ready and will not implement the Minsk agreements. Therefore, obviously, there will be some other decisions,” the expert concluded.
