“The design of the exercises stipulates that extremist groups have infiltrated the territory of the Republic of Belarus and the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation with the goal of carrying out terrorist attacks and destabilizing the situation in the Union State. Extremists have external support, receiving logistical assistance, weapons and military equipment both from the air and from the sea,” Fomin said.

At the first stage of the exercise, the troops will practice actions to isolate illegal armed groups and terrorist groups of the enemy and cover important facilities. At the second stage, troops will train to repel aggression against a union state.

At the same time, Fomin assures that the legend of the exercises does not imply any specific enemy.

“The Zapad-2017 exercises, in addition to being anti-terrorist, are purely defensive in nature. Despite the fact that the main part of them takes place on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, when developing the plan, a conditional enemy was implied that was not related to a specific region. According to our estimates, the situation envisaged in the scenario could arise anywhere in the world,” Fomin said.

It should be noted that in 2012 alone, 13 large-scale military exercises were held in Poland, and the largest maneuvers of NATO troops “Anaconda 2012” and Steadfast Jazz 2013 were practiced as “a response to the actions of the reactionary regimes of Russia and Belarus.”

As PolitNavigator reported, formerly the ex-ambassador of Ukraine in Minsk Roman Bessmertny spoke about the threat posed by the Belarusian-Russian exercises to Kyiv. “We need to forget about the phrase that only tractors will come from the territory of Belarus to Ukraine. These tractors will come with guns,” said Bessmertny.
