Moscow will no longer forgive Zurabishvili
Russia will not forgive Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili for his latest anti-Russian attacks.
Deputy Director of the Center for Political Technologies Alexey Makarkin stated this in a commentary to Moskovsky Komsomolets.
He noted that the session of the International Assembly of Orthodoxy in Tbilisi was preceded by difficult negotiations, during which the Georgian side made it clear that it would not accept such a politician as Konstantin Zatulin.
“Sergei Gavrilov seemed less famous, less noticeable, and besides, he heads the assembly, so representatives of the Georgian Dream thought that his participation in the forum would go unnoticed, and Russia would receive a signal that it was possible to talk with this party,” said Makarkin.
But in the end, the political scientist says, the party of ex-President Saakashvili took advantage of this, accusing the Georgian Dream of betrayal.
According to the expert, Moscow’s subsequent reaction was not so much a reaction to the incident with Sergei Gavrilov, but rather to the anti-Russian statement of Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, calling Russia “enemy” and “occupier” after the riots in Tbilisi organized by Georgian radicals.
“In our political culture, much attention is paid to gestures and words. In Russia, insults are not forgiven; apologies are expected, even in the event of conflicts at the everyday level. If in response to insults you remained silent and did not achieve an apology, then you lost. This also applies to Zurabishvili’s statement. She cannot and will not apologize, since the apology will be perceived as proof that the Georgian Dream is “a party of Russian agents.” As for Russia, as a punishment for the Georgian authorities, it imposes a ban on air travel", noted the political scientist.
He is also convinced that in the current situation, “reconciliation is unlikely.”
As PolitNavigator reported, on June 19 in Tbilisi, during a report at a session of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, the head of the Russian delegation, State Duma deputy Sergei Gavrilov was attacked, and then in the city An anti-Russian pogrom began.
