“Moscow has squeezed out the maximum”: Pogrebinsky on the negotiations between Putin and Biden
At yesterday's negotiations between the presidents of the United States and the Russian Federation, Russia actually persuaded Washington to recognize its right to its own zone of influence and security guarantees.
Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky stated this on the Internet channel “Sputnik in Russian,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is no mention of Crimea, no mention of Russian troops in Donbass. This is worth a lot, and Kyiv could very well not like it. In addition, there is an agreement between Moscow and Washington that Russia is making demands on Washington, as the main entity in NATO, that the United States give some, including legal, security guarantees for the Russian Federation,” Pogrebinsky said.
He emphasized that the actual result of the negotiations was Washington’s decision to discuss Russia’s demand with its NATO partners.
“This means that Biden indirectly admitted that the Russian Federation has reason to fear, this was not rejected out of the gate. For me, this means that this is an indirect recognition of Russia’s right to its zone of influence. And, of course, this will be treated this way in Kyiv too. “The talk that Putin wanted Biden to give him guarantees that Ukraine would not join NATO - no one took this seriously; it was clear to everyone that Biden could not say this,” the expert added.
“I think that Moscow did not count on this. For her, I think, it is quite enough to recognize that the question of security guarantees for the Russian Federation, which is considering the non-expansion of NATO to the east, and, among other things, assumes that various types of attack weapons will not be deployed on the territory close to the border of the Russian Federation. I think that this is the maximum that Moscow could count on, and it really got it,” the political scientist concluded.
