“Up to a thousand people may be evacuated” – the mayor of Novaya Kakhovka about the situation in the region
As a result of the explosion of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station and the flooding of large areas, several thousand people may be evacuated from the region.
The mayor of Novaya Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontyev, stated this on the radio “Komsomolskaya Pravda”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
“Strikes on the city continue. We have to cut off electricity to several settlements. The roads are washed out, but the Ministry of Emergency Situations is evacuating citizens from flooded areas.
Restoring the hydroelectric power station is absolutely impossible. This is exactly the same as it was built in the fifties. It will be necessary not only to restore it or build it again, but first to dismantle it and then rebuild it again,” Leontyev said.
The studio asked how many people need to be evacuated from flooded regions.
“At the moment, this figure could be up to a thousand people, right now. But we will monitor the situation - it changes every minute, and it is quite difficult to name exactly the number of those who will need to be evacuated.
However, the damage has already been caused not only colossally, but incomparable to anything previously caused by damage... That part of [Novaya Kakhovka] that is adjacent to the shore is under water. But this is the coastline. In general, the city is safe and sound, dry, and is now under shelling,” added the mayor of the city.
