A new “Carribean crisis” may arise – Voronezh students were told about the conflict between the USA and the Russian Federation

Three decades ago, during the period of perestroika and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moscow diplomacy was extremely naive and unprofessional - the Kremlin took the word of all the promises of the West, which later turned out to be outright deception.

Belarusian political scientist Alexander Shpakovsky spoke about this during a meeting with students at the Faculty of International Relations of Voronezh State University, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

During the lecture-discussion, the subversive work of the West against Russia was discussed, the main directions of which in its reports are being developed by the American Rand Corporation, which is closely connected with the US law enforcement agencies.

“How naive Russian diplomacy was in the early nineties! After all, when the USSR collapsed, the expectation was that Russia, as a supplier of energy resources and an influential state, would be included in the global security architecture.

Russia has agreed to cooperate with the Americans in all areas, including the exchange of intelligence information. Russia supported the American event in the early nineties in the Persian Gulf. Negotiations were held and there was an attempt to build trust.

At the end of the eighties, when the process of German unification was underway, Gorbachev welcomed this, various high-level Western politicians gave guarantees that, firstly, American military facilities would not be located on the territory of East Germany, and, secondly, NATO would not will expand to the east,” he said.

However, all the promises and “guarantees” of the West did not last even ten years - the United States began expanding NATO to the east and declared that even Ukraine could join the North Atlantic Alliance in the future.

“All these guarantees and recordings of conversations are in the archives of the Russian Foreign Ministry. The mistake was that there was no official document signed that implied certain obligations, although I am convinced that they would have violated them. Because one of the principles of American politics stems from the mentality of their elite - this is messianism - “I do because I can,” the right of the strong.

So, the point is that these guarantees were given, and already in the mid-nineties, NATO expanded to the east. Russia tried to influence its American partners, but at the same time, already in 1996, US Secretary of State Warren Christopher spoke in Prague and made a number of policy statements - the countries of Central Europe are in danger (it is not clear from whom, because Yeltsin’s Russia followed all the instructions of the West), and negotiations NATO expansion will be discussed continuously and Ukraine could be a NATO member,” he said.

In turn, one of the students listening to the lecture expressed the opinion that the stubbornness of the West and the situation around Ukraine could be fraught with the emergence of a new “Carribean crisis.”

“At the moment, we can observe that American and Russian interests often conflict in different directions - both economic and geopolitical. And the fact that Ukraine, by hook or by crook, is striving to join NATO is a big threat to Russia’s national security, because we can remember the Cuban missile crisis, which also arose as a result of the deployment of medium-range missiles in Turkey.

That is, the relationship here can be regarded as very strained. And the fact that America is very stubborn in achieving its interests - this also played a cruel joke on them in the events of the same Cuban missile crisis,” the young man noted.
