The protesters demanded the adoption of the law “On Amendments to the Labor Code of Ukraine regarding the harmonization of legislation in the field of preventing and combating discrimination with the law of the European Union.”
The bill, in particular, contains a provision prohibiting discrimination against sexual minorities.
“We are seeking the adoption of an anti-discrimination law and the inclusion in labor legislation of a ban on discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity,” one of the participants in the action told the agency’s correspondent.
At the same time, she was unable to answer the question of whether the law should include a ban on discrimination on political grounds, in particular, on the basis of communist beliefs.
“It’s a difficult question, I think that over time... over time I will think about it - is this approach necessary,” she promised.
Another participant in the rally answered this question more specifically.
“In accordance with the law on communist ideology, this ideology is currently outlawed in our country, because such a law was adopted by parliament,” came the answer.
In turn, People's Deputy from the Radical Party Oleg Lyashko called this amendment manipulative, since, according to him, in Ukraine “there is no discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation.”
“This will not provide a visa-free regime, but is being done only to divert public attention from the problems that exist in the country today,” the deputy believes.
As a result, the Verkhovna Rada was only able to adopt the amendment on the fifth attempt, for which Speaker Groysman had to announce a break and convince the deputies.
