“The International Monetary Fund has lost its will to subsidize debt-ridden Ukraine. Before transferring the next loan tranche to Kiev, the IMF demanded that Nezalezhnaya resolve the situation with obligations to Russia in the amount of $3 billion. According to the head of the IMF mission in Ukraine, Ron van Rooden, this decision is the norm when “there are overdue debts.” He did not explain whether the fund will continue to allocate money to Ukraine if it cannot sort out the loans to our country. But even a delay in obtaining new loans threatens to lead to the fact that this winter Ukraine will be left without funds to buy gas, and its Naftogaz will go bankrupt,” the publication notes.

The publication recalls that Kyiv refused to return to Moscow a three billion dollar loan received in December 2013, after which Russia filed a lawsuit in the High Court of London.

“The London High Court hearing is scheduled for January 17–20, 2017. The words of the head of the IMF mission in Ukraine in November 2016, Ron van Rooden, already sound like a direct call to action. By the end of 2016, Ukraine expected to receive the fourth tranche of financial assistance from the IMF in the amount of $1,3 billion. Obviously, Kyiv will not receive this money within the specified time frame. This means that he will not be able to purchase gas for heating the population and production needs,” writes MK.
